AGENDA
DAY 1:
Module 1:
· Get in touch with our own emotional response to the topic of suicide and understand how our responses can impact the person we are supporting.
Module 2:
· Understand the peer support approach and how it differs from the traditional psychiatric / medical model.
· Explore the role of trauma, social and environmental causes that contribute to feelings and thoughts of suicide.
Module 3:
· Begin learning the PEACE tool for trauma-informed peer support & engagement.
DAY 2:
Module 3 (continued):
· Learn to offer 1:1 peer support that is trauma-informed and specific to an individual's relationship to suicide & situation.
· Practice, practice, practice: develop our skills and confidence when responding to a person experiencing feelings/thoughts of suicide using the PEACE Tool.
· Dive into language and communication related to suicide and learn how to use the BARK tool to support a person in exploring their own relationship to their thoughts and feelings related to suicide.
DAY 3:
Module 4:
· Learn how to give 1:1 peer support to a family member, friend, partner etc. whose loved one is experiencing thoughts / feelings of suicide.
· Learn how to give 1:1 peer support to domestic violence survivors when suicide is being used as an abuse tactic.
· Learn how to give 1:1 grief and trauma peer support to family members, friends, partners, and others who have lost someone to suicide.
DAY 4:
Module 5:
· Learn how to facilitate a peer support group specific to the topic of suicide.
· Learn how to respond to the topic of suicide when it comes up in a peer support group unexpectedly.
Module 6:
· Learn more about supporting specific populations, including youth and young adults, LGBTQ persons and veterans.
· Learn how to create transparency around peer support ethics, mandated reporting and documentation.
· Learn how to foster a non-reactive trauma-informed environment.
· Learn how to refer to services, with a focus on least restrictive services first.
DAY 5:
Module 7:
· Reflect on how to foster sustainability in peer support trauma work.
· Develop 3 new skills related to trauma healing for the lived experience profession.
Module 8:
(Open to all, required for Kiva Centers employees and volunteers)
· Understand when to seek additional supervisory support.
· Review Kiva Centers’ Suicide Policy.
· Learn how to respond to a Critical Incident.
· Learn how to support both individuals and the community as a whole after a Critical Incident.
